Pursuing an Online Crafty Education: Misty’s Story

Hello everyone. I’m happy to be a guest here on the ScrapHappy blog. I’m ready to get you all
excited for the upcoming ScrapSmarter Experience and introduce myself as one of the
teachers. The last ScrapSmarter Experience  was a fabulous event that allowed us
to crop and learn together from the comfort and safety of our own homes. Classes from the previous ScrapSmarter Experience will be available for individual sale soon… want the details, sign up for emails HERE.

What is in store for the next event?

We will have a kick off keynote address by Ali Edwards on Friday. The next two days will be filled with 10 wonderful teachers sharing a bit of their crafty style with you. Each instructor will give you a lesson and then be on live for a Q&A session.

You can relax, take in all they have to show, and save those ideas to go and play with later. I am
honored that I get to be one of those teachers!

So who am I? My name is Misty Murphy and I am online with my crafty sharing as Crafty Soup.
While I’ve been crafting, keeping photo albums and journals since I was a kid, my current
scrapbooking life started in 1999 with the birth of my first baby. I received a Baby’s First Year
album as a gift and I’ve never looked back.

While raising kids my husband and I decided to homeschool very early on. Being a
homeschooling mom plays a big part in my story as I’ll explain. When I say “home” school you
may be surprised to know that we weren’t actually home much. In fact in 2011 we started
commuting to a resource center for homeschoolers that offered mixed age classes that were
free of testing and grades and based on interest and choice, which has been a deep belief for
me in educating my kids. But… that meant a long commute several days a week. I couldn’t just
drop the kids off and sneak back home. I had to have something to do with my time.

I had already been keeping a blog for years but with my diminishing eyesight, reading has
become a challenge for me and video has been the answer.

So, why not offer my own content in the video realm as well? I decided to start a YouTube channel and work on video editing in the car while I waited for the kids. I quietly put up some posts and found that I really liked it.

Recently I have decided that online crafty education is something I want to continue to pursue
and with the Covid lock downs I’ve been able to put more energy and effort into my channel and I am loving it.
In other teaching & sharing endeavors I was a Stampin’ Up demonstrator for a couple of years, and I’ve had guest spots on various blogs and YouTube hops. But the most fun was teaching kids card making classes for four years. That was quite a teaching experience that I would love to go back to in the future.

While I am mainly a scrapbooker, my crafty life goes way beyond that. I’m a card maker as well
and a dabbler in many crafty areas from crochet to watercoloring. In fact, incorporating
watercoloring into your scrappy life is what I will be teaching for the ScrapSmarter Experience
— from the simple to the impressive. But don’t worry, the tips I will share will make you feel like
an artist!

My scrapping style is typically uncomplicated with bursts of mixed media at times. That is my
experimental nature coming through. I love to try all the things and I am giddy when they are so
fun. Here are some photos of my work to give you a taste for what I’m talking about.

Here is what I usually do. Just simple everyday photos with some supporting spatters to give
the page an artsy touch.

Sometimes I just play with color and texture for easy, fun and magical pages.

And sometimes I’ll go fine art for giving to others. And those ornaments there? YOU can make
those! I promise, it isn’t as hard as it looks. I’m going to show you simple tips to play with
watercolor in your crafty life. You’ll be impressed at the beautiful art you can create that is
easier than it looks.

You can do this too!

I hope I’ve tantalized you with some examples of my work and the things I’m going to show
you in the ScrapSmarter Experience. I hope you’ll join me and the other instructors for an
inspirational weekend.
