Introducing a new feature for our ScrapHappy membership, the Scrapper Showcase!
SH Scrapper Showcase

This is our chance to get to know our scrappy sisters a little better.

We’ll ask them questions about their life, about their scrapbooking, show off some of their creative endeavours and maybe even take a sneak peek into their crafty space!

First up is Dawn Coelin from Boston, MA.

Will you please start by telling us a bit about yourself?

I am 52 years old, mom to 15 year old girl, a 10 year old boy, a 2.5 year old English lab and a 10 year old black kitty. I have been with my husband John for 31 years (whoa) and he is still the love of my life. I work full time at Mass General Hospital in Boston as a data analyst and SQL database administrator. I love scrapbooking, camping, photography and pretty much anything crafty

How long have you been a ScrapHappy member? How did you first hear about it? What do you love about it?

I have links back to LOAD 213, so my guess it was back around then.  Listen, I am lucky if I can remember what I had for breakfast, LOL! I am pretty sure that I learned about SH via my friend, Google, while I was searching for inspiration and kindred spirits. I love SH because everyone is always so positive, supportive and even if you haven’t posted in a long, long time, everyone is always so welcoming!

When did you start scrapbooking?

I started scrapbooking in 2000, after my daughter was born, but if I look back at some of those magnetic albums that I had (GASP), I was actually cutting pictures up and arranging them on pages before that. I was just missing paper and embellishments!

How did you get hooked on scrapbooking?

I have always loved photography (I used to have my own photography business!) and was looking for a better way to show off pictures of our new baby than just throwing them in albums. I believe that I saw some supplies in AC Moore and that was all she wrote, as they say.

What was your style like when you started? How has it evolved?

I don’t think that I ever really had a style … lots of sticker sneeze in those old pages! If I had to pick one, I think that when I started, I was a very clean cut and linear scrapper.

What type of scrapping do you do now?

Still not sure that I have an actual style! I tend to just create a page around the mood of the pictures. I don’t think that I can pull off some styles as well as others, but it is all good as long as I am creating and preserving memories.

Chronological or Random or Other?

I used to be chronological, but with the advent of the iPhone and being able to pretty much instantly print out my favorite pics from it, I am pretty random now.I do tend to go back to chronological when I am looking for pics to scrap for a challenge, though. Need to get those old ones done, too!

How often do you scrap?

I try to scrap at least once a week. There always seems to be something that needs to get done first, tho … darn chores and work and cooking and laundry and … and … and ….

Do you participate in LOAD? How many pages do you usually complete in a LOAD?

I do participate in LOAD! I love scrapping to challenges and I love seeing everyone else’s creativity. I usually complete at least half of LOAD and save the other prompts to go back to.

Do you have a scrapbook room/space?

My scrap space is in our attic. My husband put wonderful shelving up there for me on the walls and in the closet, so I can be .. or attempt to be … organized.

What kinds of topics do you scrap, or enjoy scrapping the most?

I enjoy scrapping the kids, my husband’s band, our vacations, the dog and cat … just about everything!

What is your process?

As I stated earlier, I love to scrap to challenges. I will usually start with pictures that fit the challenge and then go from there choosing papers and embellishments. I have been very into kits lately and those help a lot!

Do you ever get scrapper’€™s block€? If so, how do you cure it?

I don’t get it often, but when I do, I find that surfing websites and blogs helps cure it.

What is your favourite tool or embellishment?

I hate when things are crooked, so my favorite tool is the KellyCraft Get It Straight Laser Square. I use it every time that I scrap or make a card!

Do you have a favourite scrapper, or someone you look up to?

I don’t really have a favorite – I can’t choose from all of the wonderful work!

What helps you get more done?

I love to make up page packets, especially if I am going to a crop, ahead of time. I might not always have time to scrap, but it only takes a few minutes to throw pics, paper and coordinating embellies into a kraft keeper. When I do have time to scrap, I love just being able to grab one and play!

What do you love about your scrapbooking?

I love the creative release, the fact that I am documenting stories for my kids to remember. Most of all, I love looking through all the pictures and reminiscing.

Do you have a blog?

I do not.

Any other thoughts I didn’€™t ask for but should have?

Not that I can think of!

Thank you Dawn for being our first Scrapper Showcase! If you’d love to be featured next please let Alice know!
