Show of the Day: Hello, Dolly! (1964)
Hello, Dolly! is based on the popular play by Thornton Wilder, The Matchmaker, and follows the script closely with the clever addition of dance numbers and songs by Jerry Herman. The irrepressible Dolly Levi was played by Carol Channing, who originated the role on Broadway and also toured with the show. Dolly is helping the wealthy Yonkers businessman, Horace Vandergelder, to get a new bride in Irene Molloy, but is really positioning herself to wed him. She manipulates events to accomplish this, marry off Mrs. Molloy to Vandergelder’s clerk, marry Vandergelder’s niece to her beloved, and make everything turn out right for everyone. The show was directed by the talented Gower Champion, who made the dance numbers high-stepping and fun. The show was given a remarkable ten Tony Awards, and was a box-office favorite that ran for 2844 performances.
