Show of the Day: Miss Saigon (1989)

Miss Saigon is loosely based on the Puccini opera Madame Butterfly and is another Schönberg & Boublil show. It incorporates the same style of a through-sung musical with very little dialogue as used in their Les Misérables. It has beautiful, soaring melodies that show the innocence and love of Kim, the Vietnamese country girl forced to become a bar girl, and loud, raucous songs that show the seamier side of life in Saigon and the greed of the Engineer. It is probably best known for its life-size helicopter that appears above stage to take the last remaining Americans to safety at the fall of Saigon. Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim, was an 18-year-old Filipino actress who catapulted to fame with the role and became the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award. When the show opened, distinguished British producer, Cameron Mackintosh, had four highly popular productions playing on Broadway: Miss Saigon, Cats, Les Misérables, and The Phantom of the Opera.

Featured Designer:

Our featured designer today is Kathy McElfresh.

This prompt about sacrifice brought to mind several small decisions and choices I’ve made but the one with the most impact, impact that continues to this day, is the one to retire and move to Georgia to be with our son and his kiddos.  Lots of changes have occurred in the “family dynamic” in the 10 years since, and the kids are older and need less caring and more rides to friends’ homes but all I have to do is look at the 44k photos in my library and the dozens of scrapbook albums capturing those memories to realize how lucky we are to have been so close to them as they were growing up.  I used two sheet metal tags on the page, mounted on corrugated paper to hold the heavy weight and I used just shy of a million Cheeky Studios floral ephemera pieces.  The photo is of all 4 grandkids (1 a former step-grandchild who’s now a granddaughter-by-choice) in the upper bunk of our RV, the scene of many happy outings along the way.

Be sure to LOAD up your layout to the Flickr gallery by midnight Pacific time. Leave some love on the layouts in the gallery and if you’re sharing your layouts on social media use the hashtags #load1018 or #layoutaday

Happy scrapping!
