Embracing My Role as a New Design Team Member

I joined the Scraphappy family in 2021. I first learned of LOAD by watching YouTube videos and seeing how other fellow scrapbookers interpreted the daily prompts to tell their stories on scrapbook layouts. Seeing their work made me want to give it a try.

When I received the email inviting Scraphappy members to apply to be on the Design Team I almost deleted it. I thought about it for a few days, and decided to take the plunge. Imagine my surprise when I was offered a spot.  I am over the moon to be part of this talented team.

Joining a design team is like starting a new scrapbook layout….full of possibilities and creativity. I am so happy to be here!

My Story

Hi, my name is Laurie and I am passionate about scrapbooking. I live in Central New York with my husband of 50 years, a dog, Zoey, and a cat, Harley. We have 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren. We enjoy traveling and camping. With all this in my life there’s never a shortage of stories to tell. I’ve had a love for story telling since I was a child. I would cut pictures out of magazines and catalogs, glue them to paper and write a story about them. I’ve been doing traditional scrapbooking for over 30 years. I didn’t have an ideal family life growing up. There were never photos taken. The only ones I really have are the school photos that were taken every year. This is why I am so passionate about taking photos and documenting those stories.

Now, let’s take a look at a few of my creations.

I created this layout for LOAD 224. The prompt was to share a memory related to a food or feeding frenzy and use loud elements.

Technically, we’re drinking Margaritas, not eating, but hey, on $2 Margarita day it’s a “frenzy”. I tried to capture the fun moment around enjoying those drinks. I used bold, vibrant colors and playful patterns to create that fun atmosphere and excitement of a lively dining experience. Notice how the colorful, oversized letters and embellishments with the very colorful background makes the page pop, while  drawing attention to our happy faces and delicious drinks.

Enough about my love for Margaritas. Let’s take a look at another layout.

Remember those grandchildren I mentioned? Here’s a story about one.

I created this for LOAD1023. The prompt was do you or does anyone you know have an abundance of energy that you imagine doing well into their later years, and use something on your page showing that energy.

This is one of my granddaughters who aspires to play volleyball well into her adult years. She is just 14 years old, but plays on teams with the older kids. She is a member of her school team and a traveling team. I may be a little bias, but she is one heck of a player and you will never find her without a volleyball in her hands.

I chose action photos of her playing volleyball and leaping into the air to showcase her spirit and constant movement. Staggering the letters in the title gives the illusion of jumping and reinforcing her energetic personality. I used bright colors and whimsical embellishments to mirror her vibrant and unstoppable nature.

Final Words

As I begin this new chapter as a design team member, I am filled with excitement, so much excitement, and gratitude. I believe that scrapbooking is a way to connect with our past and our present.  Don’t be afraid to tell your story, good, or bad. We all have stories that should not be forgotton.

I look forward to seeing you in the next LOAD challenge.
