Let’s Transform a Window Display into a Scrapbook Layout

It’s a new month and time for a new Unexpected Inspiration challenge. This time around Alice and Sara have challenged us and you to be inspired by window displays.

The first thing I thought of was Macy’s Holiday window displays……but I’m not ready for the Christmas vibe just yet.

I had already chosen the photo I wanted to scrap for this challenge and I wanted a whimsical feel to my layout, so off to Pinterest I went searching for my inspiration.  This is what I chose.

Choosing Background Paper

Looking at my inspiration photo you’ll notice the neutral background. My first step was to choose the paper I wanted to use for my background. i knew I wanted to use a light wood grain. I narrowed it down to these.

The first one was too white and the grain was too dark. I wasn’t feeling the second one at all. It just didn’t go with the photo I had chosen. I finally decided on the third paper. It is more cream than white, which makes it the perfect choice.

Let’s take a look at my finished layout.

How a Window Display Transforms into a Scrapbook Layout

Let’s take a side by side look. Can you see where I drew my inspiration from?

We already talked about using a neutral background. Since I want my photo to be the focal point, I positioned it in the center of the page, much like the bunny in the window display.

I punched circles from patterned paper using a 2″ punch, and placed them in the upper right and lower left to mimic the balloons. I’m sure you noticed there are no balloons in the lower left of the window display, but I wanted to create a diagonal design. The circles are replacing the other elements. I sprinkled some tiny hearts around the page like confetti. After all this is a birthday layout.

The Final Breakdown

Here is a textual breakdown of the layout:

  • Top Section: Cluster of circles, or even flowers on the left and/or right side.
  • Middle Section: Your main photo
  • Bottom Section: Layered shapes, such as smaller photos, embellishments or journaling cards.
  • Title: Position above or below the main photo, if room allows.

I hope this post has inspired you to create a layout, or even a card based on a window display. If you do and you’re a member of the ScrapHappy family, please upload it to the Circle space. You may even win a prize!  I’ll leave you with a few closeups.
