Let’s marble!

Today I’d like to take you on a little paper marbling journey with me!

I started a paper marbling session for the last ScrapHappy ‘Unexpected Inspiration’ challenge. And I just couldn’t stop. It is so exciting every single time you lift the paper up to see what has come out of this one!

I used Kreul Magic Marble paint. They are solvent based and build an oily film on the water surface. You can use these paints directly onto the water, no additional treatment necessary.

You start with dripping the paint onto the water, up to three or four colours is ideal. Have in mind, that you will see the most of that colour on the paper you droppped last. Now you can swirl as much as you want. I used skewers for that, but you can experiment here, maybe with a fork or a wide-toothed comb for a more detailled pattern.

You could swirl just a little…

… or a bit more for some finer lines…

… or you could not swirl at all, that also gives a great effect and a completely different look.

I recommend to experiment with different papers since they take the paint differently and you get different results in saturation and brightness. I ended up using mostly my all-time go to paper, the American Crafts white textured cardstock. I liked the colours the most and it has a certain thickness that it won’t curl that much.

No matter what mixed media I’m doing I never let good paint go to waste and use it always to do some backgrounds with the leftovers. It’s no different here. Especially since you have to clean up your water surface anyway to start with the next line of colours. That way I got some very nice and subtle background papers.

The possibilities are endless, just have fun and experiment!
When I was done with the plain white paper I tried printed patterned paper as well as some doilies, loved both!

And I love the special effect of the gold and silver paint you already saw above.

I only had to stop because there was no more space left to let all that goodness dry! I’d loved to try it with coloured cardstock as well.

I had a total blast with the paper marbling and ended up with those very little piles of new selfmade scrapbooking paper! I can really recommend this, such fun! As a bonus you get some hell of a nail polish for free!
And you can do all sorts of things with those papers! Use them for layouts as backgrounds or for layering, die-cut them, use them for cards or to wrap some special gifts for your loved ones.
