Tell us YOUR style

Recently I shared a post detailing plans we have here on the blog for including more scrappy styles. From mixed media to planner albums, we hope to bring inspiration to all the ways of memory keeping. In line with that goal, I asked our community what they considered their scrappy styles. It certainly is nice to read about the details that make our fellow scrapbookers tick!

If you are reading this and don’t see the style that matches what you do, please leave us a comment. We’d love to have your input! We will update this post as info comes our way. Be sure to bookmark it for future reference.

(You may even find a few other inquisitive questions along the way that we would love your input on!)

Those who know me would say I tend to be left-brained — very logical and analytical and NOT very creative or artistic. This translates into my scrapbooking as lots of straight lines, symmetry, and very little in the way of complex clustering. If you see mixed-media, creative (translate attractive) stamping, or use of artistic design concepts on one of my pages, then I probably Scrap-lifted someone else. Thank you Sara Scraps, Alice Boll and Misty Murphy to name a few. That is why the ScrapHappy Community is perfect for me because my “sisters” continue to inspire and motivate me to keep going and keep making pages to highlight my photos and tell my stories.

I really relate to Jackie’s words. I used to be much the same way. Mixed media and balanced embellishments did not come naturally to me. I had to work through a lot of trial and error to get to pages I love (most of the time!).

Yet, I still struggle with things like white space and clean and simple styles. How about you? Are there styles that you love to see but have a hard time creating yourself?

~ Misty M.

My style is a bit eclectic with some common components. I tend to be “full bodied” —the opposite of white space!—and use the good old design principles of visual triangle embellishment clusters and the rule of threes/thirds. I also love mixed media. Those pages tend to be more chaotic though! Plus I love a good grid and adore prominent circles. My typical layout isn’t likely to be on a magazine cover since they are so busy and full… But creating in the flow makes me happy.

I love layering bold, bright products & mixing patterns. I very rarely use solid colours (except for matting). Although I still aim for visual triangles or ephemera clusters to keep the layout pleasing to the eye, I’m not afraid to shake things up in uncharacteristic ways.

I also love the cutest, unique products. These types of elements add a fun flare to my projects in a way that mimics by bubbly personality (at least I hope they do).

Lastly, I’d say dimensional layers/clustering is my jam! You can never have enough foam squares!

I have a confession. The cutsie style of crafting was never my thing. Yet over time I have come to appreciate this style in ways I didn’t expect. Like Lindsy’s first layout there. Doesn’t that page just bring a smile? It is so happy and colorful. The joy is infectious. So, have you ever thought something was “not your style” only to change your mind later?

I am a seat of my pants type of scrapper. I have a general Idea of where i’m going but often will switch things up in the middle of a layout. I love layers and lots of pattern as you can see in [the first] layout.

I’m not afraid to fussy cut paper and often create my own embellishments this way. In the [second] photo below I fussy cut the houses and trees at the bottom of the layout and popped up some of the layers with foam squares.

Did I mention layers? Love them! I’ll take any opportunity to add more pattern and color to highlight my photo.

Claire brings up the fussy cutting task. This one has its lovers and its haters. I used to hate fussy cutting but have come to love some of the results fussy cutting brings to a layout in the end. Is there ever a technique you use that you don’t enjoy doing, but love the final results?

I actually do have a style. Like Claire W., I ‘go with the flow’ but looking back at my layouts, I embrace mixed media, Project Life cards for my journalling. and pictures, and I definitely like to draw a border around my pages.

[Sometimes I use] Project Life to print my photos [collages] because I don’t know how to do it in Photoshop.

I was part of a blog hop challenge to use Project Life style journaling cards on my layout. I don’t use them very often but ever since that challenge they have been on my mind! Is there ever a product or technique that you ponder but don’t often use?

I love layers and pattern! I TRY to keep things “simple” but often go off the rails. And I like to try other styles or mix in mixed media elements here and there. But most of my layouts feature a lot of colours, patterns and embellishments.

I let the paper do most of the talking in [the second] layout, but still added buttons to the deigns for more texture and interest

I would call my style thematic. I normally choose colors and themed elements that help tell the story. I lean more toward using vibrant colors and lots of layering.

For [the first] layout I used warm oranges and reds to reflect the season, and layered lots of leaves.

[For the second] I used soft pastels and affirmations to create a calm, reflective mood. Again, lots of layering with paper.

I’m literally the contrary of clean and simple! One might say crowded would be a fitting description. 😉 I just don’t get those pages with one tiny little photo and not much around. Although they are beautiful sometimes. 😉 But I like to show my photos, so either like to use a lot of them or one big picture. Same with the embellishments, I like to spread it well around the page. And I like to combine different kits, especially with digi layouts I can get a bit crazy there. For the layout above I used 6 Kits from 6 Designers, that is a moderate amount for me. 😉

This layout is also a good example for my more literal style. There are autumn leaves in the pictures? Then it is very likely to have some leaves on the page. I love matching themes and items and colours. With that it’s a given that I love seasonal scrapping, since I love taking pictures of nature.

I always love mixed media, as well playing with paint and stencils and everything fun as well as the digi version of it.

I hardly use sketches, although they can be a lot of fun to try new things and get more variety. But usually I start with an idea in mind and don’t need a sketch as a jumping of point. I’m starting to use templates for digi layouts more often but then usually struggle with the paper choices to fill all the layers. 🤣

There is so much goodness in this post. I could just spend hours looking over all these creative layouts. I hope you found something inspiring here.
