Traveler’s notebooks originated in Japan created by the Traveler’s Company (formerly Midori). Traditionally the notebook consists of a simple leather cover with elastic bands that allow you to insert multiple notebooks. The inserts can be plain, lined, or grid as well as mixed media o sketch paper. Standard sizing is 4.3in by 8.3 in, but other sizes include passport- 4x6in, A5 -6x8in and B6-5×7.

My personal choice is the standard sized inserts, it’s similar to my go to 8×8 scrapbook size. I usually “wallpaper” the inserts with patterned paper and from there the sky is the limit! Washi tape, ephemera, and rub-ons make their way onto my pages.

I tend to journal more in my traveler’s notebooks vs. a traditional scrapbook page. Journaling can be hidden in tuck spot behind photos, or in added pockets. These are great places to add tickets and other memorabilia from an event.

A great technique is to split a photograph across the pages, more photos can be added using washi tape to create a fold out and photo hinges can be used to layer photos for a waterfall effect.

Watercolor backgrounds are fun, fabric scraps can be included, windows and frames can be created with cutouts.

My notebooks are comprised of photos and quotes that are personal to me vs. the scrapbooks everyone else sees, maybe that explains why I tend to journal more on these pages.

Of course I have an entire group of inserts dedicated to my scrappy adventures-

Finally a couple of tips to make your notebooks durable, I sometimes double layer pages using wet glue to adhere them. Book or washi tape can be used to strengthened the edges as well the center fold lines. I hope you all consider trying a Traveler’s notebook to record your stories, I look forward to seeing your creations!
