Spring always seems to bring a creative reset. The light shifts, the colours soften, and suddenly there’s an urge to make something fresh. Or you could be dealing with the threat of a spring snowstorm, like where I live right now! Regardless, I think we all similarly come into spring with a standard idea of what to expect and what to craft.
But today, instead of reaching for the same go-to 12×12 layout inspiration, I’m here to encourage you to think of this season as a perfect excuse to branch out, experiment, and play with formats that feel a little more unexpected. Think smaller scales, interactive pieces, layered mini projects, or even storytelling formats that break away from the traditional page. Alternative spring-ish ideas can still capture the season’s energy, but with a twist that keeps your creativity feeling new.
Florals and Fur
If branching out is not your thing, and you decide to stick to 12×12 layouts, you can still change things up. Consider darker tones, larger-than-life images, smaller photos, and/or furry friends. A layout like this offers more versatility than one may think. Even though the imagery might suggest spring, the story you tell doesn’t have to be seasonal.
It's the Little Things
If you feel the craft room calling your name, but are strapped for time, ATCs can be the perfect spring pick-me-up. They are like the bite-sized snack of the crafting world! Pull out your stamps and stencils – and even shaker bits – and just play! ATCs are also a fun way to use themed products (like ones meant for spring holidays, such as Easter) in a fresh way. You can use them for decor, send them like you would a card, or trade with friends.
Critter Cards
If you’re in the mood for cards, think about ways to celebrate the critters and crawlers that either (a) aren’t always the most popular in collections (such as foxes or weasels), or (b) don’t get as much love (I’m looking at YOU bugs). Keep your backgrounds neutral, your sentiments more generic, and let the characters steal the spotlight!
A Pocketful of Happy
Pocket-sized tags are another lovely alternative to standard projects. You can have fun layering all the best ephemera from your stash (think fresh florals, butterflies, citrus, and/or fur babies) while still allowing photos to take centre stage. Inserts that pull in and out between the layers keep elements tucked neatly together like a secret special surprise. Projects like this make great gifts, or work as seasonal decor.
Turn the Page
Bright artistic patterns, ephemera, and coloured images/stamps make wonderful choices for bookmarks. The great thing about bookmarks is they can also be enhanced further to create tags, journal inserts, or larger embellishments/journaling spots on a layout.
Pretty Little Remakes
If spring cleaning is on your mind, keep a watchful eye for the types of boxes perfectly suited for an upcycled DIY. With a bit of ingenuity, layering, and fussy cutting you can use all your cutest paper scraps, ephemera, and cut-apart cards to breathe new life into bland packaging. A touch of black can also be a bold choice in a season generally reserved for subtlety and soft pastels.Who wouldn’t want to receive a gift in a lovely piece of art such as this?!
Folio in Bloom
My last project idea (returning to something more photo-based) is a mini folio using less traditional spring colours, patterns, and imagery. Folios are a favourite for me because you can add flip flaps, inserts, and tags. Once again, I’ve also featured darker tones not generally associated with spring. But the vibes are equally as fun!
A Fresh Finish
To finish today’s post I’ll leave you with a curated collection of typical spring-like topics, if you plan to stick to a more a traditional seasonal route while creating, along with a list that’s a little less expected. No matter your chosen path, there’s always a myriad of opportunities and options awaiting your next crafty adventure.
Typical Spring-Themed Topics & Elements:
- Florals (fresh blooms, bouquets, wildflowers)
- Pastels (pink, mint, lavender, baby blue)
- Rain & umbrellas
- Butterflies, bees, birds
- Gardening & planting
- Easter motifs (eggs, bunnies, baskets)
- Sunshine & blue skies
- Renewal, growth, fresh starts
Spring-Adjacent (A Little Less Expected):
- Spring cleaning & organizing
- Farmers’ markets & local finds
- Rainy day coziness (books, tea, indoor moments)
- Transitional wardrobes (layers, light jackets, sneakers)
- Travel plans & weekend getaways
- Sports seasons kicking off
- Bright pops of neon or bold colour mixed with neutrals
- Everyday routines shifting with longer days
Whether you lean into classic florals or explore these slightly offbeat angles, spring is all about possibility – and your projects can reflect that in both theme and format.
