Show of the Day: Beauty & the Beast (1994)

Based on a classic French fairy tale and adapted from the 1991 animated film of the same name, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was the first of the Disney musicals on Broadway. Although critics panned the show, audiences were enthusiastic and made it a blockbuster. It is considered the first of Broadway’s family shows, beginning a new generation of theatre attendees who have bolstered Broadway’s appeal thus creating jobs in the industry, plus giving rise to a whole genre of musicals geared towards families. The eight songs in the animated film were used in the musical as well as a number cut from the film, all of which were written by the successful team of Alan Menken & Howard Ashman. Ashman died just before the film was released, so Tim Rice joined Menken to write the additional songs for the musical. B&B was the tenth longest-running Broadway show with over 5000 performances, had four US tours, a UK tour, long-running productions in Los Angeles & Toronto, as well as international tours to over thirty countries.

Choose Your Prompt (or do both):

Featured Designer:

Our featured designer today is Jodie Morton.

I must admit I was at first a little lost with this prompt. If the prompt had been simply to scrap about Beauty & the Beast there are a number of different ways that I could have approached it because this particular show has been in my life in a number of different ways. Last year my daughter even performed in a dance item as the character of Belle! But scrapping about my goals? Mmm… yes that’s a lot harder. I finally decided to scrap about a fairly constant goal that I’ve had for years (ie. to exercise regularly) and how this has proven to be difficult (because I REALLY don’t like exercising!) and how I have finally managed to achieve it. Since it was such a long story I knew I wouldn’t be able to add much else to the page but I decided to incorporate the rose from the prompt. So I created this myself with some paper piecing, fussy cutting and pen work – I’m very happy with how it turned out.
