Show of the Day: Hairspray (2002)

Hairspray was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards and won eight, including Best Musical. It ran from 2002-09 on Broadway, had national tours, several international productions, and was adapted into a film version in 2007 as well as an NBC Live television production in 2016. The musical is based on a 1988 film by John Waters of the same name and centers on a teenager in Baltimore during the 1960’s who wants to appear on the local TV dance show. The show has strong female characters who discover that body size and race are not as important as individuality and acceptance to all people, thus making overcoming discrimination a powerful theme of the show. Music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman.

Featured Designer:

Our featured designer today is Jeanette McGee.

Hair Spray was the Broadway Show represented in today’s prompt.  I took the prompt literally with use of hair product.   Back in July, I got my hair styled and done at a real salon – not Great Clips or Hair Cuttery.  I loved my new hair style and started using hair gel.  My son, Andrew has used Pomade on his hair now for a couple years, since he started college.  So, I took a photo of our current hair products and recent photos of us (while we were in New York City in Sept.) of us with our hair products in use.  I used a clear color spray mist to represent the look of hair spray.  The die cuts I used were from a Project Life kit I bought that was on clearance at AC Moore.  It was a fun layout.
