Show of the Day: Damn Yankees (1955)

Damn Yankees is the story of an aging Washington Senators baseball fan who makes a deal with the Devil, aka Mr. Applegate, to be transformed into a young player and save their season. He negotiates an escape clause, and as his loneliness for his wife increases, Applegate tempts him with the sultry Lola so he won’t use the escape clause. The show was very popular, with Gwen Verdon stealing scenes when she was onstage, and Ray Walston playing the Devil as a brisk businessman. The show won six Tony Awards, including Best Choreography to Bob Fosse. Music & lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.

Featured Designer:

Our featured designer today is Karen Fitting.

I had recently been to a Major League baseball game so this is the perfect
prompt to showcase those pictures.  A friend and sorority sister who lives
in Seattle wanted to come for a weekend visit so she planned a time when
her home team, the Seattle Mariners, played the Oakland A’s.  We tried to
get many of our sisters together but only managed a couple, with our
husbands and other family & friends.  It was a beautiful day for baseball,
and an A’s win!
